I just found a hefty egg case of my native mantid: Stagmomantis californicus! I found this one under a log…. Some mantids will place ootheca under logs or stones as protection.

Probably best to just leave them outside. Even with some of our past super-warm winters, they always seem to know the right time to hatch. I hear they eat their mates for the little buggers to eat. We bought 2 egg cases last year, as a experiment with the grands. They hatched in a jar, and we had hundreds of little ones, eventually we had to let them go in the yard.
