Why do podcasters wear headphones

First off, if you use zoom check out my previous article on how to use zoom for podcasting. What happens here is that when you are not speaking, your microphone is recording the audio coming out of your speakers. So the speaker is being recorded by their mic, and then a split second later they are being recorded AGAIN by the speakers you are using. When put together in an edit, this will destroy your podcast audio and make it unusable.

When this happens it cannot be fixed, even the best engineer in the world cannot fix this. It can all be avoided by simply wearing headphones when you record a podcast. If you are recording a podcast on zoom or another remote recording platform it is so important, that your guest wears headphones. This is essential for all the same reasons I have outlined above. What type of headphones should your guest wear?

Even the little earphones that come with a smartphone will do, just get them to use anything they have to avoid them listening on any speaker. While the purpose of your headphones as the podcast host is to monitor and control the recording, the purpose of the guest wearing headphones is so that they are not listening to you on speakers and doubling up on a recording source!

If you are editing your podcast, you need a good pair of headphones unless you have an expensive pair of speakers. They are the best alternative to professional mixing speakers. They are also ideal for podcast recording and editing. Another scenario where a podcaster may choose not to wear headphones is when conducting an interview and they think that the natural flow of it will be disrupted by the host or the host and guest wearing a set of headphones.

Still spend time with headphones on during the setup process and check on the audio at regular intervals to ensure no issues are present in the audio. Even better, take an assistant with you and have them monitor the audio throughout the interview. Now that you know the importance of wearing headphones for podcasting , which ones should you get? There are different schools of thought on this. Some might argue that open back headphones take in more ambient sounds and are closer to how a listener would consume your audio.

With the isolation comes a deeper focus which allows you to find and fix those flaws in your audio. Also, remember the sound bleed issue we mentioned earlier?

Open back headphones bleed sound much more than closed back headphones do. All in all, we think that closed back are the way to go hence all three options below are closed back. Unlike consumer grade headphones built for making music sound good, studio headphones are made with a flat frequency response to give you the true sound of what was recorded.

This is really important in helping you identify issues in your audio. Some podcasts can run into hours in length which means long periods of time at the editing desk when putting the show together. We look for soft padding and plenty of adjustment when it comes to sizing up headphones from a comfort perspective. Derrik says:. September 2, at pm. Mark John Clifford says:. May 29, at am.
